Some of North Carolina’s most dramatic mountain scenery is found at Chimney Rock State Park, with the signature 315-foot spire overlooking Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure.
Chimney Rock Park was acquired by NC State Parks in 2007, and our relatively new state park continues to develop all around us. The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation has acquired more than 6,800 acres in Hickory Nut Gorge for Chimney Rock State Park.
A spectacular way to spend a vacation with it's rock outcroppings, beaches and majestic mountain backdrops. The Lake Lure area has been used several times as a filming location, beginning with Thunder Road (1968). Other movies that include scenes filmed in or near Lake Lure are: A Breed Apart (1984), Firestarter (1984), Dirty Dancing (1987), and My Fellow Americans (1996). Scenes in the film The Last of the Mohicans (1992), including the final 17 minutes, were filmed at nearby Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Gorge
THE HICKORY NUT GORGE starts at the Eastern Continental Divide in Gerton, NC...about 20 minutes from Asheville, and runs through the communities of Gerton, Bat Cave, and Chimney Rock, and ends 10 miles later at Lake Lure--dropping about 1800 feet. Route 74 runs along it with 14 hairpin curves.
Rushing waters, rocky cliffs, a giant waterfall, and pristine forests make Hickory Nut Gorge a popular destination for hikers, leaf-peepers, and photography buffs.
